Fletcherism

What is Fletcherism

What if I told you I have found a way that could make you thin again?

What if there is a way of losing weight that is so simple it is just silly?

Stay with me you are about to find out if this is true.

I came across this interesting idea when reading one of Wallace Wattle's books. This idea is "fletcherism". It reminded me of the fun we had playing with this idea at bording school. So what is this and what good is it?

What Exactly is Fletcherism

Wallace describes it as follows: "Fletcherising consists in TASTING and CHEWING every mouthful of food until it is reduced to a liquid, so that it gets away from you by involuntary swallowing;" This means that the digestive process begins in the mouth. This is good for the system as the stomach does not have to work to hard digesting food if it is already chewed well and mixed with a lot of saliva.

Begin your meal with the food you are most inclined to eat, no matter what it may be; take a moderate mouthful, and taste and chew until it disappears. When you feel that you have eaten enough, stop; do not eat another mouthful, no matter who urges you, or how tasty and inviting the food.

Why can Fletcherism Help with Weight Loss

Well fletcherism is a way of forcing you and your body to work in the way it has been designed. Firstly, if we were still living in caves, the food we eat would be much more fibrous and would need a good amount of chewing for it to be swallowed. And secondly, this chewing would be starting the digestive process in the mouth by mixing saliva with the chewed up food.

Today a lot of our food is highly refined so there is great difficulty in chewing the food. It is as if the mouth knows that this food has already been broken down and quite quickly wants to swallow it. Not only is this fast swallowing of food not very good for you, it means that you are eating very quickly and can consume a great amount of food before feeling satisfied.

Fletcherism and spending time chewing the food 20 to 30 times before swallowing means that you will take a lot longer to eat. We tend to be hungry for about 20 minutes and after this time will not feel the need to eat. So fletcherism will minimize the amount of food you comsume before you feel satisfied because of the time it takes to eat.

Eating slow means really eating less.

What Does it Take to Practice Fletcherism

To practice fletcherism you need a certain amount of  will power and perseverance You will frequently catch yourself dropping back in into the old habits of bolting your food. Whenever you do this you must stop, and start again. It is not easy to change a lifelong habit of eating fast and swallowing your food "whole", but it can be done. That is by persistently, repeatedly and continuously chewing each mouthful 20 to 30 times, instead of in the way you have done it in the past. As you see the results of your new found habit it will get easier to keep at it. You will no longer feel bloated after eating too much and the kilos will start to fall off you simply because you are comsuming less food.
