Losing Weight for Wedding

How to Start Losing Weight for a Wedding Today

One of the most common questions I’m asked involves women and men both who want to try losing weight for wedding. But before you go off spending half your wedding budget on diet pills, supplements and the latest fad diets, here’s a few tips to help you shed pounds before the big day.

Getting Started

Before beginning, it’s important to understand that you truly will only need two things to achieve your goals: a solid exercise and diet plan, and some hard work! By now you know that nothing in life comes easily, and there’s no "magic pill" that will burn your fat away. Understanding these keys is the real difference between reaching your wedding looking the same as today, or dropping the jaws of your soon to be spouse, friends and family as you walk the aisle!

Step One

The first step is to set a realistic goal. This is going to vary based on your situation! If you’re getting married in two weeks, you need to set a different goal than someone getting married in six months. (If you don’t have much time, don’t despair. I will talk about a way you can still burn away pounds of body fat in just a few days.) Most doctors agree that two pounds per week is a healthy rate of long term weight loss if you’re trying to get rid of body fat. Set something achievable and work towards that. Most "lose weight quick" diets or pills can be very harmful to your body, depriving you of water and nutrients or burning beneficial muscle tissue, and have a negative effect on how you actually look, which is the opposite of what you’re going for! Our goal is losing weight for our wedding, but the idea is to get rid of extra fat, not the good stuff!

Step Two

OK, so now you have a goal. The next step is to create a diet. The dreaded "D-Word!" Don’t worry, despite what you may have been told, a weight loss diet doesn’t have to starve you or force you to eat raw foods or cardboard. In fact, a proper diet can actually give you more energy, fill you up more and burn fat at the same time! Let’s get started…

To do this you have to first determine your daily caloric needs, or your maintenance intake. In other words, the amount of calories you need per day to stay the same weight. For most people, to find this you can simply take your current weight and multiply it by 12-15. For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, your maintenance calories would fall between 1800 and 2250, depending on your activity level throughout the day.  In the simplest terms, if you eat less than this you will lose weight, eat more and you will put it on. Hardly rocket science, is it?

In general, 3500 calories equals about one pound. So in other words, if you eat 500 fewer calories than your maintenance per day, you will lose a pound per week. But remember, we want to lose fat while keeping as much muscle tone underneath as possible. So what should those calories consist of? Depending on your body type you are going to want a specific ratio of protein, carbohydrates and fat. (Yes, you still want fat!) Finish It!

Almost there. Now you just need a solid exercise plan. Aim for 30-45 minutes of cardio three to four times per week. This will kick start your body into burning more energy and actually raise your daily maintenance requirements! (Even on off days!)

Now you have everything you need to start losing weight for a wedding. The proper application of diet and exercise WILL show outstanding results. Feeling in a pinch? Just because you don’t have long till your wedding, doesn’t mean you can’t look amazing.
