Discover The Truth About A 500 Calorie Diet

Do you feel like you've tried every diet out there? Then you might want to try the 500 calorie diet. This diet is considered to be an extreme form of dieting; but is highly popular. Low calorie diets are common and 500 calories is at the low end of the calorie scale.

A diet is considered low calorie if it involves eating no more than 1200 calories per day. The idea behind a low calorie diet is to lose weight quickly. If not administered correctly they can be dangerous and as such it is important to plan your 500 calorie diet with a physician.

You lose weight when you burn more calories than you take in. However a very low calorie diet can actually do more harm than good. Calories are converted to energy in the body. When your body craves more calories (energy) it will change its metabolic rate and turn to seeking different sources of energy. This can cause your body to start to use up its own muscle mass.  This can have a highly detrimental effect on your body.

500 calories a day may be sufficient for some people depending on their:
Overall wellbeing and general level of health
Activity level (work, lifestyle, sports)
Gender (women tend to burn less calories than men, unless pregnant or nursing)
Height (and body type)

For other people, particularly obese people, consuming 500 calories a day is almost like starving yourself. You are most likely used to taking in 2000 to up to 5000 calories a day. If you suddenly drop your caloric intake to 500 calories a day, your body moves into starvation mode. Your metabolism then slows down to conserve energy.

While you are on a 500 calorie diet your body learns to live with fewer calories. That means if you go back to your high calorie habits (as many people do) you will have a sudden gain in weight, which is more than what would have occurred, had you not gone on your low calorie diet.

The best way to determine your ideal caloric intake is by using a body mass calculator. This will tell you the quantity of calories with which you will stay at the weight you are without having to increase your activity. When you have calculated your figure, subtract 500 calories, and the result is how many calories you should eat each day for steady, healthy, weight loss.

Men and women's ideal caloric intake are different. The average woman needs only 1200 to 1300 calories a day to survive. The average man needs about 1500 to 1600. We are all so different. This is an excellent reason to consult with your physician before starting any diet.

In conclusion a 500 calorie diet can be dangerous. However, if proper precautions are taken, such as a physical, to determine your overall fitness level, you may lose weight quickly.
