Spiritual Ways To Lose Weight Effectively
If you think that the Bible concentrates only on topics about eternal life, religion and other philosophical stuffs, then I advise that you should read the Bible twice, or thrice enough for you to understand them.
Indeed, you read it right. There are actually ‘spiritual ways’ to lose weight. One could ever hardly think of this, but in fact there are some famous Bible verses that obviously says something about healthy living.
"Whether you eat, drink or whatever you do; do it all for the glory of God"- 1 Corinthians 10:31
I am so sure you are familiar with this Bible verse, but you just don’t take it literally. If are a believer and you love God, everything that we do should include Him and ALL for him. So in terms of healthy living, it’s not all about gym, or having the perfect bod—few people realize this, but MOST of the time, THE REASON WHY WE FAIL TO LOSE WEIGHT IS BECAUSE WE DON’T HAVE PROPER MOTIVATION TO DO IT.
I’ve conducted a survey just within my community (through my friends, school organizations, neighbors and family) and found out that 90% (which means, MAJORITY) of them have wrong reasons to lose weight. Either:
(1) They want their old clothes to fit again or
(2) they want to gain back their self-esteem.
These reasons should be secondary, but we should remember that ANYTHING THAT DOES NOT INVOLVE GOD is a sin. Having a great shape out of these "shallow" reasons are called vanity. And that is one of God’s seven deadly sins.
So ask yourself again the same question: Why do you want to live healthy? Is it merely because you want to have a perfect Coca-cola body? Or, you want to live longer so that you can serve God and people longer?
(Another advise which falls in this Bible verse: Think only of happy and Godly thoughts while eating. Remember, whatever we do, it should be all for God's glory! Even health experts have proven this, when we are emotionally negative while eating, it adds up to our weight and is often the cause of poor digestion.)
"Let our moderation be known to all men--the Lord is at hand" - Philippians 4:5
Remember, we should take care of our body because it is God’s temple. We cannot serve the Lord to the fullest if our bodies our rotten and we physically can’t work properly. In all aspects, especially in eating, MODERATION is always the key. The Bible does not say we should stay away from eating meat, in fact we are allowed to enjoy eating ALL kinds of foods as long as we eat them enough for our satisfaction. Take note, "we eat to live, not that we live to eat".
"Slothfulness casts into a deep sleep, and an idle person will suffer hunger"- Proverbs 18:15
Was there a time when you are so bored, have nothing to do—and then instantly you think about FOOD? Yes it happens to us MOST of the time, especially when we are bored. Ever noticed too that when we are so focused with our job, we tend to actually forget about eating? It’s because when our mind and bodies are "idle", we are more prone to TEMPTATION. A food is not actually temptation, but it only becomes one when we think about wrong motives regarding it.
Remember the famous quote, "an idle brain is a devil’s workshop"? Don’t you notice that when we are not occupied with something, we tend to think about wrong things? Such as "masturbation" for instance. So a simple and practical advise, we should keep ourselves busy or rather, PRODUCTIVE (for God’s glory) so we can only think about eating when we need it.
"Desire" was the reason Eve ate the apple
"So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate." (Gen3:6)
Imagine seeing sumptuous, mouth-watering gourmet foods served in a big, round table. It looks pleasant to the eyes, isn’t it? With all the delicious foods in front of you, instantly your mind conceives the desire to eat all those foods. Therefore, with that desire, we already have wrong reasons it eating that food.
The possible reasons:
1. Because we might no longer have those sumptuous foods for a long time (Worry)
Because we want to have more foods on our plate than the others who will take part on that food (Selfishness)
Remember what I said earlier—anything that does not involve God is a sin. So when we think of these reasons, there is actually a corresponding sin related to it. The Bible tells us not to worry about the food we eat or we will eat the next day because God provides everything for mankind. Even the birds have something to eat, why not us humans, who are most loved by God among all His creations?
So then again, our reasons for eating goes us back to our number one reason: We should eat to LIVE, we should eat healthy so that we can live healthy to serve God longer.
So, do you REALLY want to live healthy? For God’s glory? Do you want God’s help with your bad eating habits?
Then I ask you to do these simple steps to live it all up to God—for God is an ever-loving God, one who only wants the good for us if we help ourselves too.
First, ask God for forgiveness for giving in to temptation for lust of food. Ask yourself clearly, what sins have you committed because of your lust for food? Whatever your reasons are, sincerely say sorry; for asking forgiveness is always the first step to a new and more Godly-lived life.
(James 4:7, "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you".) We all know that no matter what we do, or how much effort we put into a certain thing, we cannot do things effectively without His guidance. Ask God for His power to help you overcome bad eating habits. Resist the devil—take actions which involve God, and the devil will flee from you.
1 John 5:14-15, "And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us. And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him".Ask God for His plans for your weight loss. Allow Him to lead you what He wants you to do. Ask for a desire of only healthy foods and ask Him to remove all your desires and cravings for unhealthy ones. Remember—if you seek Him, most especially His plans for your life, you will never go astray.
Always pray before and after eating—make God part of all your eating habits. Never fail to thank God of what He has given and always imbibe His teachings on your eating habits.
Lastly (and most importantly), NEVER judge or laugh at a person for solely for his body. Sometimes those who are skinny are even those who eat too much. It is ALWAYS important not to judge someone on the outside because it does not really reflect what his real intentions are. We should always take a deeper look on a person—because sometimes, inside the body, he’s in fact carrying a serious health problem that is in desperate need of help.
