Eight Ways to Lose Weight Over the Holidays
With the holidays fast approaching, it's easy to slip up on your healthy eating routine and overindulge. Most people gain between five to ten pounds over holiday season, and those who are already struggling with being overweight or obese often find themselves reinforcing poor eating habits. It might seem impossible to avoid high fat and sugar laden foods over holiday season, but there are ways to keep you in tip-top shape--and still enjoy the festivities. When you're ready to get a head start on your New Year's resolution, here are just eight ways to lose weight over the holidays:
1. Get to the gym! No matter how busy your schedule is, make time to workout at least once per day. You don't have to do the same routine every day, and it's best to alternate your fat-burning cardio routines with strengthening and muscle building workouts. Aim for at least 45-60 minutes each trip and you'll be shifting your metabolism into high gear. Regular exercise naturally reduces your appetite, keeps your heart in good shape, and will put you in a much more positive mood to combat stress over holiday season--and lose weight in the process!
2. Learn to sample. Portion control is a top priority over holiday season, so when it comes to the buffet line you need some strategy. Pile up your plate with fresh fruits, vegetables, and low calorie dips and dressings and then enjoy a few bites of your favorite dishes as a ‘side.' It's a simple way to cut calories and still make the most of the flavors your craving, and can help you lose weight much more easily.
3. Don't go to a party hungry. Eat a healthy and nutritious meal before heading out for the night, and you'll be less likely to overdo it at the holiday table. Make a weekly eating plan to keep yourself on track and actually lose weight. Just count the holiday treats and dinners as a ‘treat' on your plan.
4. Eat a healthy breakfast. Starving yourself all day in hopes of a grand meal is going to leave you hungry, anxious, and can easily lead to overeating. Make sure you eat a healthy and nutritious breakfast each morning so you can keep your metabolism in good order, and eat modest portions of food throughout the day. Eating breakfast can help you lose weight because it reduces the chance of overeating throughout the day.
5. Don't snack all day long. Unless you've got a good stock of low fat popcorn, granola bars, fresh fruit and veggies, and other healthy treats by your side, move away from snacking on chocolates, candy, and leftovers. These are full of calories that can easily pack on the pounds.
6. Limit your alcohol intake. Alcoholic beverages can easily lead to weight gain, and you're much more likely to eat more after the buzz subsides. Moderation is essential for your health, and you can still lose weight by opting for spritzers, a glass of red wine, or just non-alcoholic drinks at the party.
7. Keep a calendar or diary. If you're good with counting calories and writing down your day's food intake, consider carrying a small calendar or diary with you to jot down your notes when needed. Writing down what you eat can make you much more conscientious about your meals, and when you want to lose weight, you'll find it easier to cut back a little more each day.
8. Avoid eating to lower stress. Many people turn to food for comfort during stressful times, but there are other ways to nurture yourself. Treat yourself to some real rest and relaxation at a spa, or explore a new sport you've been thinking about trying. A new activity can be just what you need to move away from food and manage stress in a healthier (and calorie-free) way.
