Why Is It So Hard To Lose Weight?
There are many reasons why people want to lose weight. Of course, like the saying, when you look good, you feel good. We want to look attractive to the opposite sex or we just want to feel good in our own skin. Let’s face it, most of us if we have a few extra pounds or kilograms to lose may not feel the motivation to lose weight, exercise or even go on a diet.
There are so many diet programs or diet pills out there that seem to promise so much that we begin to doubt ourselves. We have heard or even known someone who went through a crash diet and ended up being bulimic or anorexic with gaunt cheekbones and all. Maybe we are scared we end up like them. Besides, taglines in social media when we watch movies or read books such as ‘ We should always treasure what we have’ or the more popular ‘ Personality is more important than looks’ seem to convince us that being overweight is not so bad after all, so long as we are loved by our family and friends.
But I am guessing that you are reading this because you want to find out a way to lose weight. Maybe even adopt a healthy lifestyle or mindset and be the person you always imagine yourself to be. Maybe you wake up one morning and find out you cannot wear your favorite shirt or you start to feel your thighs clash against each other and they hurt. Maybe you overheard an attractive male coworker tell someone, ’I think she’s pretty but she’s fat, not my type at all’ and you felt hurt by the comments that were not even supposed to be heard by you. I know, the feeling sucks. How do I know this? I know because I have friends who went through this. They told me they felt insecure most of the time and felt they cannot do much about their weight.
Maybe it is time to take a grip and stop giving yourself excuses. The initial step is always hard but it gets better once you start to see results. Besides, the tagline I mention earlier is so contradicting when we see celebrities who are beautiful by a mile obsessing over their weight or body. We are all humans, celebrities have their insecurities too. Although looks are not everything, first impressions do matter in our daily interactions with people.
Like most other things we hope to achieve, the mind must be prepared first to experience a little discomfort. If you are not willing to give up your favorite food even though they are bad for you, then no matter how many books you read, no matter how many diets you try, none of them will work. Again, it all starts with you. At times, you may experience an intense craving for a certain food. Then you go on an overeating binge. This will be discussed further later.
I know that being overweight is something I cannot label on people as ‘god-given’ or ‘you’re fated to be fat’; our body shape is mold by our genetics but being overweight unlike other deathly diseases like cancer is curable. There are some factors that come to play but the main reasons why people are not losing weight are: having low levels of metabolism, constant hunger, food cravings and eating when you are bored or not hungry. Low metabolism could be the result of a less than ideal condition of the hypothalamus gland. If it is not working properly, no matter how many small quantities of food you eat, the body will not burn off the calories.
Lack of fiber and water leads to a clogged colon which in turn keeps metabolism slow. When your bowel movements are not regular, this would lead to slow digestion and metabolism then food cravings will constantly be there and you will always be hungry.
Poor blood circulation also contributes to low metabolism. Lack of vitamins and minerals that promote healthy blood circulation could be a reason. Clogged arteries from eating too many trans fats from processed food could also be a reason. Lack of regular movement like exercise and walking also contribute to low metabolism.
So many processed foods we eat these days are loaded with artificial sweeteners, monosodium glutamate and trans fats. These chemicals used by the food companies are intended to make you increase your cravings and hunger for their food. Although it is hard not to buy processed foods these days, you could try reducing your normal intake or opt for healthier versions like wholemeal crackers or oat biscuits instead of the usual sugar and cream biscuits.
These are a few examples of reasons why people keep putting on weight no matter how they try. A good book I recommend reading on how to lose weight permanently would be Kevin Trudeau’s The Weight Loss Cure. Read it and you would be surprised as I was when I first read it. That’s it for this article and good luck on your weight loss mission. Remember that it is never too late and it is possible to keep the weight off for good.
