Three Ways To Lose Weight


With more of our population currently growing overweight, many of us are on the hunt for the best ways to lose weight. We wonder if some of the ways to lose weight we find are going to be far superior than others, which is then what fuels the ongoing debate about exactly what diet or exercise program we should be following.

Unfortunately many of us do get caught up in the wrong ways to lose weight and as such, either don't get the results we want and fall off the program or else end up yo-yoing around on the weight loss program and just end up gaining more weight in the long run.

That said, in general, there are three main ways to lose weight you can use. Here is what they are along with the pros and cons of each.

Diet Only

One of the ways you can lose weight is by using a diet only. This is a method many people take when they are too busy to keep up with an exercise program, or just simply don't like exercising in general.

Technically this can yield good results as diet really is about 80% of the total weight loss equation. People will have much greater success with fat loss if they can get their eating habits under control, rather than just trying to burn off all the excess calories they're eating.

The downside to using a diet only though as one of the ways to lose weight is that it doesn't help preserve muscle tissue to as great of an extent, which theoretically means that you could wind up decreasing your metabolism, making it harder to maintain that weight loss in the long run.

Exercise Only

The next of the ways to lose weight is using exercise only. This is a frequent approach among individuals that are already highly active and just love to eat. They'll simply increase their activity more, hoping that it will help burn off the pounds.

The drawback to this is that it takes a lot of exercise to burn off some of the common foods people are eating.

Considering you'd have to run for a good hour just to burn off one fast food hamburger, you can see how much exercise you may wind up doing.

Further to this point, then you have to take into consideration that doing so much exercise could really put you at a higher risk of overtraining. If you start to overtrain, this could actually cause your body to hold on to body fat as it does this as a protective mechanism.

So, while it's great to be really into exercise, as a fat loss method, it's probably not the most optimal method as far as results are concerned.

Exercise and Diet Combined

Finally, the last of the ways to lose weight is by combining both diet and exercise. This is going to be the optimal way as then you'll really get the best of both worlds.

It can get a little more complicated when you're combining both exercise and diet because then you're going to have to take measures to make sure your body does have the necessary energy to fuel the exercise and recover from it, but that you still aren't eating more than what's needed to cause the weight loss to happen.

On the whole though it does typically make weight loss much more successful because then not only is your daily calorie burn increased (meaning you can eat more food), but you'll also help preserve muscle tissue, which keeps that metabolism up at a higher rate.

So, next time you decide it's time to shed a couple pounds that have crept on, make sure you keep these points in mind.
