Before I give you the low down on the fat burning foods that will help you to lose belly fat, let me first of all ask you a very important question. What body shape are you? Are you an apple or a pear shape? The reason I ask this because your body shape can determine your predisposition to falling prey to certain illnesses, which can have a catastrophic impact on your overall health and longevity.

Studies have shown that pear-shaped women who add pounds around their hips, buttocks and thighs are more susceptible to problems like osteoporosis, and have higher levels of HDL (good) cholesterol. What has been said above also applies to men, who usually gain weight around the middle with middle age spread; but nowadays it seems even the young male is affected as a result of his junk eating lifestyle.

So what should you do? Well I recommend that you get rid of the belly fat sooner rather than later and start consuming foods and fats that have been proven to melt fat specifically from the belly area. Now, you may be surprised at some of the foods I recommend on the list; foods which were once seen as fattening but are now been hailed as essential to weight loss. Protein, Good Carbs, Healthy Fats, Dairy, Spices and Chocolate!

Let's start with Protein.

Unless you have been living on some other planet, you must have heard about the Atkins Diet. It is a diet that is based on protein and fats with little or no carbs. Now, I'm not advocating the Atkins Diet, because after a few weeks it is just not realistic to maintain, and whilst you may lose weight on it you will find it unsustainable in the long run. I mean can you imagine a life without carbs? I know I couldn't.

But there is one good aspect to the Atkins Diet and that is the protein element. It has been found that the consumption of protein does not spike sugar levels, thus you do not release too much of the fat hormone insulin, which retains fat on the body. Protein also induces fast weight loss and is one of the best ways to lose belly fat.

In order to acquire a flat belly you should base your meals on protein, any leans cuts of meat, poultry and fish. I would recommend 50% of your meal should be protein.

When preparing protein use baking and steaming for your cooking methods. Avoid frying. When consuming poultry always remove the skin, and cut off any fatty pieces on the meats before eating.

I use copious amounts of herbs and spices to give my protein flavor. This adds to your meal and will make it more palatable and enjoyable.

 
Good Carbs

As I said earlier, I could not imagine a life without carbs, but it is essential to eat good carbs to lose belly fat and weight generally.

So what are good carbs? They are foods that do not spike your blood sugar levels too quickly, they are foods that keep you feeling fuller for longer after a meal, and they are foods which aid good digestion and include:

Breads - Pumpernickel or Rye

Cereals - Oat Bran, All Bran, Oats, Shredded Wheat, Weetabix and Muesli

Rice - Basmati Rice

Noodles - Wholegrain or Verde pasta or spaghetti

Potatoes - New potatoes or a small baked potato

Vegetables - All veg is good provided they are cooked properly, either steamed, stir fry or boiled al dente. Salad items, lettuce, cucumber, celery,tomatoes, natural beetroot and onions are also acceptable.

Fruits - Some fruits are better than others, and I recommend Apples which are full of pectin and will leave you feeling fuller longer. It is also a handy snack plus they are low in calories, Grapefruit, Oranges, Pears, Berries (all berries), plums, peaches and nectarines.

Use the following fruits in moderation. Even though they contain natural sugars they can still spike your blood sugars;

Bananas, Mangoes, Melons, and Pineapple.




 
A Little Dairy Goes A Long Way

We all need dairy in some form or another in order to maintain calcium levels and build strong bones. Dairy products that helps towards the whole fat burning process to loosing belly fat are:

Eggs - Also a form of protein eggs are excellent for loosing belly fat. You can eat the whole egg if you wish, but if you look at body builders, they just use the egg whites, and you won't see an ounce of fat on them!
