A Guide to Protein Shakes
There is no weight loss tool like exercise. Many people look for machines that will take the work out doing exercise or go on radical diets to lose weight fast. The simple truth of the matter, however, is that with a proper diet, exercise is the best way to get rid of those pounds. Just because weight loss comes from exercise doesn't mean that supplements can't be beneficial. Protein shakes are an excellent source of fuel albeit it isn't always vital to take them.
Are They Essential?
Protein shakes are not essential to a healthy diet. Some health experts even agree that too much protein can be unhealthy, adding too many calories to your diet, which are ultimately stored as fat unless you exercise enough to burn them off. Protein shakes are beneficial when you don't have a schedule that allows you to cook a healthy meal each day.
Convenience
Convenience is one of the largest benefits to taking protein shakes instead of meals. If you have a busy schedule then it can be very difficult to squeeze in a balanced meal that's high in protein but low in fat and carbohydrates. Chicken is one of the top providers of protein but to cook chicken properly takes time and effort. A protein shake on the other hand takes two minutes to prepare; you simply add milk to your protein shake powder and mix the two ingredients together.
Finding the Right Quota
If you decide to take protein in any shape or form in order to lose weight or build up muscle, it's important to measure your intake. You shouldn't see any bad side effects of drinking protein shakes unless you drink way too many. The easiest way to calculate your needs is to multiply 0.36 by your body weight in pounds. For example if you weigh 140 pounds you need about 50 grams of protein per day. The average chicken breast has 30 grams to 60 grams of protein so it's very easy to find protein in your everyday meal; again, it's just a matter of whether or not you have the time and energy to cook.
Timing Your Protein Schedule
It's a widely known fact that it's not wise to eat anything right before a workout as this can lead to cramping and discomfort. A lesser known fact is that after your exercise is actually the best time to eat. It's important to fuel your muscles after you work out. Your body is primed to start refueling about 45 minutes later, up to 2 hours, so this is the best time to crack out that meal or protein shake. While drinking protein shakes is more convenient on a tight schedule, if you have the time to cook a meal, eating has other benefits besides refueling your body. When you have finished your work out, your body is more sensitive to insulin and eating triggers its release into your body. Insulin helps your muscles better refuel for your next exercise and also trigger protein synthesis.
Taste
While not the most factor to consider, many people agree that protein shakes do not very often taste good. The general consensus is that they taste quite the opposite. You will not always be able to spruce up a protein shake but you can experiment to see if you can get a better flavour out of your meal replacement. Fresh fruit can be used, as well as cinnamon, coconut milk, honey, etc. It's wise to stay away from exotic flavours such as tropical.
