Are Fad Diets Good For You?

You can lose weight fast on a fad diet. However, does this back up the claims of internet and magazine ads that fad diets are the way to go?


It may feel great to lose a lot of weight quickly. Unfortunately, once the diet is over you tend to put all the weight right back on. This is because a large amount of it is due to a loss of water weight. As your body rehydrates the weight comes right back.

What are some of the reasons a fad diet is not good for you?

1. Fad diets typically get you to avoid most foods except a single food type. This can result in missing the nutrition you need which is available from a balanced approach.

Fad diets might encourage you to include vitamins and supplements to make up for any deficienices while on the diet. Unfortunately, your body may not be able to make the best use of these supplements as you are lacking many of the food which help you to absorb the nutrients.

2. Most fad diets are quite restrictive and even unappetizing. In a short period of time you can end up with overwhelming cravings for other food. In the worst case, you give up early. Quitting can adversely affect your self esteem and you end up feeling guilty for not haveing the willpower to complete the diet.

3. Fad diets are not a permanent solution. As you don't make any change to your eating habits and lifestyle the weight loss tends to be temporary. What is worse, is that you can end up being a yo-yo dieter and be trapped between periods of weight loss followed by weight gain.

No matter what you see in the media about quick weight loss fad diets, realize that these diets will never work long term.

The good news is that it is possible to lose weight and sustain that weight loss. The best way is to avoid overeating, eat a mixture of healthy foods and get some exercise on a regular basis.
