Injury: What now?
O.K. so you are losing weight and getting healthy but then you injure yourself making normal exercise impossible without pain. What now?
This is what happened to me I went all in head first into exercising and dieting losing 7lbs in just over one months time. Then what happened, I tore my meniscus while exercising to a Jillian Michael's dvd and all because I wanted to lose weight quickly. That is why I became determined to do it the right way and became a certified weight loss consultant so I could teach others to Get Fit Right. Unfortunately I didn't know then what I know now and can't go back and avoid my injury so instead I made sure it made me stronger.
If you have an injury and you are asking "now what?" well let me tell you the first thing you have to do is stop exercise and see a doctor. Make sure that it is a doctor that is listening to you and your concerns and not just a computer symptom checker. A good doctor can tell you about your injury and evaluate the rest of your body to determine if you can still exercise or if you have to stop all together until healed.
It took two months before my doctor realized my injury was serious enough for surgery. In the mean time I hobbled on a crutch and neglected dieting as I was depressed from being in pain and not being able to exercise. Once the surgery was finally done I was in more pain and had to take serious pain killers that made normal thought process unattainable. It was four long months of physical therapy before my knee was 90% back to normal and at the point I could go back to a normal exercise routine.
By this point I had lost six months of time and gained a couple pounds back. I decided I had to get serious about my weight loss and about my health. I was 22 years old when I had the surgery and already having health problems, not only my knees but also prediabetes and at risk for many other things. It was time to take action without overacting and that is how I fell into going to school for my weight loss consultant certificate. Now that I have that I am able to plan out a safe weight loss path that does not include injuries or failure.
Since my schooling came after my recovery I did not have the proper knowledge or faith I have now. If I had known then what I know now I would have not been injured in the first place because I would have listened to my coach and my body and not forced my body to perform so long. If I had learned just after my injury I would have focused on my diet to lose weight but only second to my recovery. If you are injured right now put your main focus on recovery and second on eating healthy foods and you will get better and when you do I will be here to give advice or to coach you to a successful weight loss.
