Description
KansasState University nutrition professor on one of the low calorie diet plans featuring Twinkies loses 27 pounds in 10 weeks. The junk food diet experiment demonstrated the importance of calories in a weight loss program. The weight loss was achieved by maintaining a calorie deficit and exercise. The conclusion was weight loss was attainable without nutritional food as long as a calorie deficit was maintained.
You must remain dedicated to any diet plan. No all-you-can-eat buffet, buffet bar. or potluck foods. This is a junk food diet and does not include soluble and insoluble fibers or a chicken breast.
Does Numbers Add Up
The Twinkie diet permitted consumption of 1800 calories per day. The professor's normal calorie intake for maintaining a constant weight was 2600 calories per day. This works out to an 800 calories deficit per day or 56,000 calories for the 10 weeks. Burning 3500 calories is equal to a weight loss of one pound. For 10 weeks the 56,000 calorie deficit contributed to 16 pounds of the weight loss. The remaining 11 pounds of the weight loss was achieved by exercise. He averaged 550 calories per day in exercise. A brisk walk for an hour could burn this many calories. I agree the numbers add up. Based on my calculations this is achievable.
Junk Food Twinkie Diet
For purposes of proving nutritional food is not necessary for weight loss the professor consumed 60 percent of his calories in junk food. He supplemented five Twinkies per day containing a total of 750 calories with 300 calories of other junk foods including chips, cakes, sugar-coated cereals, and soda. To prevent his health from deteriorating he added a protein shake, vitamins, green beans and celery for the other 750 calories. Other healthy foods such as meats, whole grains and fruits were not in the diet.
Twinkie History
The original Twinkie was developed in 1930 by The Continental Baking Company in Indianapolis. They came up with a product to utilize the food processing machinery used to make a cream filled strawberry shortcake when the strawberry season was over. Originally the Twinkie had a banana filling until the banana shortage in World War II. When they switched over to a crème filling made of shortening it became so popular that they never switched back to a banana filling. It became the baking company's best selling cake. Hostess still sells over half a billion twinkies every year.
Twinkie Ingredients
A Twinkie is 150 calories of flour, sugar, eggs, lard, flavorings and minor ingredients including sorbic acid, cellulose gum, polysorbate 60, and calcium sulfate.
A Twinkie weighs 43 grams and contains 150 calories. It contains 39 ingredients including 5 g of fat, 20 mg of cholesterol, 2000 mg of salt, 25 g of carbohydrates and sugar. The creme center is shortening.
Twinkies are packaged in pairs and have a long shelf live due to preservative ingredients.
Twinkie Diet Experiment
The Twinkie diet appears to be one of the low calorie diet plans because its weight loss is attributed to a calorie deficit for a significant portion of the weight loss. Actually it was an experiment by a nutrition professor to express the value of calories in dropping pounds. It was demonstrated weight loss occurs whether the calories were from healthy foods or junk foods.
Twinkie Diet not for Long-Term Weight Loss and Health
Twinkie diet will not sustain long-term weight loss and health. There was no intention to prove it viable as it was just an experiment to illustrate the value of calories in weight loss diets. It was only tested for 10 weeks personally by one person, the professor. He did expereince adverse effects of the diet with increased triglycerides, cholesterol and blood pressure.
