Best Diet? High Protein - Low Glycemic Index

What Is the Most Successful Diet?

The most successful diet is the one where the foods have a high protein content and foods where the glycemic index* is low.

A recent study followed over 750+ overweight adults. They ate 800 calories per day and lost an average 24.6 pounds. The participants were divided into control groups such as high protein, low glycemic index; high protein, high glycemic index, etc.

* Glycemicindex.com defines the glycemic index as follows: The glycemic index or GI describes this difference (in foods) by ranking carbohydrates according to their effect on our blood glucose levels. Choosing low GI carbs - the ones that produce only small fluctuations in our blood glucose and insulin levels - is the secret to long-term health reducing your risk of heart disease and diabetes and is the key to sustainable weight loss.

The Study's Results...

The study was published in The New England Journal of Medicine with the following results.

About 550 people stayed on the diet for six months. Those who stayed on the high protein/low glycemic index diet were not as likely to drop out of the program as the other participants.

Additionally, the people who consumed high protein vs. low, gained less weight back after the program ended and the same for those consuming low glycemic index diets compared to high glycemic index diets.

Thomas Larsen, PhD, and Arne Astrup, DrMedSc, Faculty Life Sciences, University of Copenhagen headed the study and said this, "In this... study, a modest increase in protein content and a modest reduction in the glycemic index led to an improvement in study completion and maintenance of weight loss,"

Foods Low/High on the Glycemic index...

To review foods on the glycemic index, go here: www.southbeach-diet-plan.com/glycemicfoodchart.htm

It will give you an idea of foods that can actually lower your blood-sugar levels. The idea is to choose those foods lowest on the gylcemic index.

And to lose weight, stick to foods high in protein and low on the glycemic index!

CAUTION: Don't begin any new therapy or diet without first discussing with your health-care professional!
