And the facts about weight loss
So you’ve decided that you’re tired of being overweight and looking for ways to lose weight quickly and safely. You know that to do it quickly will require discipline and sacrifice, but you’re willing to do it because you’re tired of the comments that others are making about your physique.
Let me first outline a couple of things. Most people will start skipping meals thinking that this will aid in fat loss. This is not a good way to approach the problem because by skipping meals, you’re putting your body in starvation/survival mode. What this means is that excess calories are stored as fat, and calorie expenditure during exercise will be minimized to conserve energy. This is counter-productive, so don’t fall into the trap of skipping meals.
To lose weight safely, you’re looking at one to two pounds of fat a week. This translates into a calorie deficit of 3500-7000 per week. We can manage this by cutting 500 to 1000 calories from our daily intake. One of the easiest ways to accomplish this is to cut out all beverages from your diet and investing in a Brita filter. By exclusively drinking water, you’re cutting out unnecessary calories. Also, most people aren’t taking in enough water, which the kidney needs to operate efficiently (your kidney is the organ that breaks down glycogen, or fat, into usable energy)
Losing more than two pounds a week is dangerous for a few reasons. First, your body may start decomposing your muscle to get the energy it needs to sustain the body. This isn’t efficient, because you’re losing muscle rather than burning fat. The other danger of losing more than two pounds a week is that while your skin is elastic, losing weight too quickly doesn’t giving your skin enough time to adjust, releasing in loose or saggy skin. The only way to rectify this problem is corrective surgery, which is both risky, uncomfortable, and costly.
In addition to eating correctly, you’ll need to incorporate exercise into your daily life. Exercise is great because not only does it help you shave off calories, but also promotes better health overall by improving cardiovascular and muscular function. One of the easiest and cost effective ways to start exercising is buying a pair of running shoes and running around the neighborhood, working from running a half mile without stopping to four miles without stopping. For those that are a little more ambitious, you can even start weightlifting to get stronger to increase your basal metabolic rate (the rate at which your body consumes calories).
One of the most important things to take away from this article is that weight loss isn’t a temporary solution. If you want to stay healthy, you’re going to have to change your lifestyle, whether it is changing what you buy at the supermarket, joining a gym, or picking up running. If you feel like there is no time during your day to incorporate exercise into your daily routine, get up an hour earlier and make it happen. Getting out of shape is a lot easier than staying in shape, so you’re going to have to do a few things to make sure that your hard earned work isn’t wasted when you actually do shed some pounds. Once you hit your goal, be positive that you don’t revert back to your previous lifestyle. Most people become complacent with their results, and regain their weight. Your body has a tendency to revert back to its normal state, so you’ll have to keep up this new lifestyle to train your body to adapt to the changes.
