If you live in the U.S., chances are good that you need to shed a few pounds. Studies indicate that the average American is overweight, and the trend is worsening. Maybe you’ve thought it over and decided to do something about it but haven’t quite decided what. The answer is simple, but not easy. Everyone already knows how to lose weight – we need to eat less and exercise more. It doesn’t sound like rocket science. But it doesn’t sound like much fun, either.
Celebrities often show up on the covers of the tabloids overweight, and then two months later they’ve lost 30 pounds. How do they do that? Is it a magic pill, an expensive gym membership, or a personal trainer? The answer is yes, and no. Yes, celebrities have those things (well, except for the magic pill), but no, that isn’t how they lose weight. They lose weight by eating less and exercising more. The expensive gym and personal trainer are just tools that help them eat less and work out more often. They are nice tools, to be sure, but they aren’t absolutely necessary. You can change your diet and increase your activity levels in much easier, less expensive ways.
Many obstacles to weight loss are in our minds. We can remove these obstacles just by thinking of them differently. For example, we need to eat less, but that sounds unpleasant right from the start, doesn’t it? Think of eating less and your very next thought is one of hunger. So instead of eating less, change your diet. That doesn’t sound so bad, right? Change your diet. The trick is to change your diet in a way that results in less calories without making you feel like you are eating less. There are several ways to do this. One quite successful way is to eat smaller portions, but eat more often. There’s nothing wrong with snacking if you are constantly eating healthy foods. Eating a Twinkie every hour isn’t a good strategy, but having frequent snacks of fruits or vegetable definitely is. The frequent meals keep you from being hungry, and also keep your metabolism high. You might even end up eating MORE and still losing weight, because your metabolism remains high and you burn more calories than you take in.
The other key is exercise. That immediately brings negative thought to mind: I don’t have time, I’m too busy, I have to pick up the kids, I have to go to work, etc…. So, once again, the trick is to increase activity without feeling like you are spending time on it. This can be done in very simple ways. For example, if you sit at a desk all day, try doing toe lifts or flexing your thighs. Your legs have big muscles in them, and they take a lot of energy to move. Doing repetitive motions, all day long, burns just a little bit of energy, over and over and over. And just like pennies add up to dollars, small calorie burns add up to weight loss.
Another important thing is to feel like you are doing something good. The thing personal trainers give celebrities is affirmation – you are doing this, you are doing great, I can see a difference, etc… You can do the same thing for yourself by simply putting on a sweatshirt when you walk out to the mailbox or walk the dog. That sweatshirt will make you feel like you aren’t JUST walking the dog – you are also exercising, and that will be something you can feel good about.
