My Personal Success Story
How I lost my 15 pounds over a period of six months ? Simple answer "Will Power" and "Getting Creative".
All along my life I was never overweight. The schools times were busy studying, walking, biking and playing. So being over-weight was never an issue.
When the college days get over and the work life started and you get stuck to your chair for most of the day.. that's when the pounds started creeping up slowly and one day I realized that I have gained almost a 15 pound in a year. Watching a scale was moment of realization that something needs to be done. That something was "life style change". All I needed was a will power to do exercise and getting creative to fill the exercise in the routine of my life.
It took me about an six months to gradually lose that 15 pounds and come to a stable weight. Here is how I did it and you can too.
The keys to reaching or staying at a healthy weight are regular exercise and good eating habits. Some people think exercise and good eating require lots of effort or planning. But that's not true. In fact, the best way to work them into our lives is by making small changes that gradually become part of our routine.
Motivation is key to maintaining a regular "exercise schedule" yes, schedule. Exercise can be fun and entertaining, but if you're not keeping a schedule, chances are you aren't doing it consistently enough. A schedule is self-motivating because you'll have that appointment every day and won't want to let yourself down. So figure out a time that works well for you if you find a time that works well for you and a workout buddy, even better.
First, I made a simple change of taking public transportation for couple of days in a week (Taking a train instead of just driving to work). I walked to and from train station. That was so easy .. it added 30 minutes of walk in my day.
Second, I teamed up with a friend to walk with me in lunch hour. So we do a brisk walk just after lunch for about 30 minutes. We take a stroll around the block or through a nearby office park. If you don't have time to stray far from your desk, do a dozen or more laps around your office or speed-walk a floor in your office building. Anything that gets you up and moving at a brisk pace for 10 minutes or more will help revitalize you for the rest of the day.
Sometimes it's hard to get motivated to work out on your own. Things always come up in your schedule, and it's easy to skip exercising. One thing that helps me stay on track is when I make plans to work out with a friend. Having someone who's counting on you to be there makes it less likely that you'll skip it or put it off. It'll motivate you to go knowing your friend expects you to be there. Plus working out and being able to chat can make the time go by quickly, and it's so much more fun that you may actually forget you're even exercising.
FAST FACT : How many miles do you need to walk to lose 1 lb ? : There are 3500 calories in 1 lb. of body fat, a person with average weight (150 pounds) needs to walk 42 miles.
I also made a lots of simple small changes and they do add up.for example ..
I took the stairs : When given the choice between riding an elevator or taking the stairs to your office, opt for the latter. It is an easy way to add a few minutes of exercise into your day. Climbing stairs not only burns calories, this cardiovascular activity also gets your heart pumping and helps circulation. Of course, if you work on the top floor of a building, taking the stairs all the way to the top may be unrealistic. Instead, take the first few flight of stairs and then ride the elevator the rest of the way. If you happen to be working from home and don't have many stairs, spend 10 minutes going up and down the same flight of stairs.
Parking the car away : If I happen to take the car to office, I choose a parking spot thats away from the office entrance rather than nearest one. That adds the exercise without much effort.
Exercise can keep energy levels high. So get up 15 minutes early and do some yoga or other stretching activity. Fast walk or jog for 15 minutes at lunch. Do the same thing after work / school. Add to that taking the stairs, gym class, and walking between classes during the day, and you've probably reached your 60 minutes a day of exercise.
Remember, you can lose weight either by decreasing your calorie intake or increasing the number of calories you burn. Any health strategy should include both, but if you want to lose weight fast, exercise is essential.
Problem with Weight Loss Diets is Results Don't Last : What's the main problem with every weight loss diet? They are a temporary fix at best; results never seem to last. And why don't the results last? Simply put it's because your body is a product of your lifestyle.
Temporarily changing your behavior (dieting) and then returning to your usual habits will obviously put you right back where you started (or worse). Only by changing your daily habits will you permanently change, and if that isn't what you want to hear, then you're not ready for permanent weight loss.
TIP : To stay on track of your dieting goal, occasionally you can give yourself a treat. Don't be very hard on yourself. It is ok to indulge once in while within limits, so you don't feel deprieved. A chocolate bar or a frozen yougurt is all fine once in a while.
