The Definition of a Healthy Diet
Following a healthy diet is very important when trying to lose weight fast. Modern medicine defines a healthy diet as one that contains high amounts of fruits and vegetables, low amounts of fatty foods and red meats, whole grains and raw foods compared to refined and processed foods, fish, dairy and nuts to provide protein and moderate intake of sugar, caffeinated drinks, alcohol and salt and pepper. Foods that do not contain chemicals and pesticides are also considered part of a healthy diet such as unprocessed and organic foods.
According to the United States Department of Agriculture, the "food pyramid" should be followed to provide all the required daily servings of foods that provide a healthy diet. Prior to their new food pyramid they suggested that individuals should eat 6 to 11 servings of pasta, rice or bread, 2 to 4 servings of vegetables, 2 to 3 servings of dairy products, 2 to 3 servings of fish, beans, eggs or meat and a small amount of sweets, oils and fats daily. The new revised "food pyramid" now recommends that individuals should choose a range of foods depending on various calorie counts. Individuals with health conditions such as diabetes need to follow their physicians advice on diet. Those with heart problems are normally advised about proper nutrition for heart-health by a nutritionist.
Healthy diets should consist of fresh foods that are easily obtained during certain seasons. These foods provide the best over-all health benefits as they are filled with essential vitamins, minerals, amino acids as well as antioxidants and fiber. Choosing to steam, broil or bake foods will also provide a healthy diet compared to fried foods that are cooked in butter or oil. When frying, heart-healthy oils should be used such as canola or olive oil.
Following a healthy diet can make a big difference in how an individual feels and in helping an individual to lose weight fast. Healthy diets provide energy, while preventing the feelings of weakness and sluggishness. A healthy diet also is needed by the body to function properly as it is essential in maintaining proper functioning of the vital organs. Eating foods that are healthy and avoiding overeating can help prevent diabetes, heart disease and obesity. Breakfast is also considered the most important meal of the day and when this meal is skipped individuals often end up eating more later and do not receive the needed energy the body needs for optimum performance.
