The macrobiotic diet is a vegetarian diet emphasizing low-fat and high fiber intake. It consists of mainly whole grains (50 to 60% of daily food intake) and vegetables (25 to 30% of daily food intake). In addition beans are eaten daily (up to 10% daily food intake).
The diet includes small amounts of fish a few times per week, but eliminates meat, dairy and eggs.  Followers find quick and easy weight loss do to its strict rules and elimination of fat and processed foods.

The main staples of this diet include: whole grain cereal, tofu, brown rice, seaweed, fermented soy products (miso soup), beans, fruits and vegetables.

Pros

There is little evidence against this fast weight loss as most diets high in vegetables and fruits will increase over all health and promote rapid weight loss. Since most Americans eat diets highly based on processed foods, following the Macrobiotic diet will help encourage increasing fruits, vegetables and whole grains. There are some researchers who encourage a macrobiotic diet for fighting Cancers and Aids and some who find it helps those suffering symptoms from menopause and premenstrual syndrome.

Cons

Many will find the restrictive nature of this diet to difficult to follow. Other find the diet unaffordable as it promotes organic fruits and vegetables and whole grains. Eating fresh foods daily will require many trips to the supermarket. In addition eating at restaurants may be difficult when following this type of diet.

Celebrities who promote the macrobiotic diet include Madonna and Gweneth Paltrow. The diet has many extremes or levels and depending on what ailments you have, you will be encouraged to follow one of ten different levels varying in intensity.
