1) Chew your food! That is, eat whole foods like actual fruit instead of juice and chunky soups instead of powdered cup-a-soup.
2) Eat slowly to allow your body to register the fuel you are eating. Set aside time to sit down and eat, to focus on what you are eating. That means no eating in front of the tv or computer!
3) If you are hungry at the end of a meal, have an extra serving of vegetables instead of having dessert. You’ll feel full faster and you won’t be taking in those extra calories.
4) Drink water. When you are thirsty all your body wants is water, so drinking soda, coffee, milky drinks or alcohol just adds unnecessary calories. If water is too boring flavor it with lemon or half a teaspoon of honey.
5) Sneak vegetables into your diet. Grated or pureed vegetables such as carrot, cucumber or zucchini are relatively flavourless and can be added to bread and cake recipes. Add ½ - 1 cup of vegetables – you won’t taste the difference AND it will make your cooking more moist.
6) Stick to whole grains. The added fiber will make you feel much fuller and is far more nutritious.
7) Plan ahead! Go grocery shopping with a list of everything you will need to eat for the upcoming week. Make sure you include snacks – if you have healthy snacks around you are less likely to reach for the chips or biscuits.
