Diabetes Eating Management :: Diabetes Eating Myths

____Diabetes eating means stopping eating what I like to eat.____
__________Diabetes eating effectiveness is enhanced_________
______________by losing weight & doing exercise____________
_________________But is this the whole truth?_______________
___________________Or even a partial truth?________________
______________________Is it true at all?____________________

Diabetes Eating :: Myths

Diabetes eating statements go something like the following.
Diabetes eating means::
Cutting out the foods you like.
Losing a lot of weight.
Eating only quality food.
Exercising excessively.
Skipping meals.
Cutting out starchy foods..
No Fast Foods.

And none of this is true. They are all myths. You can stop worrying now!

But why are they perpetrated? Because, like all things, one person says it (often now on the internet) and everybody else cannot be bothered to check the facts, and they restate what has been said before.

So how can this be changed?

Read this article to find out the truth of the matter and dispel all of the rumours and misinformation that you have been fed before and taken as gospel. Forget what you have read previously. It is probably all garbage!

Just take a moment to reflect............................

Why have these myths been perpetrated?
Why do we believe that diabetes eating means any of these things?

Like all urban legends: one person says it and like wildfire it turns viral. Then everyone says it, so it must be true.

Right?
Wrong!

Look at the evidence for sensible eating when diabetic.

There is no evidence that we should drastically change our eating habits to the extent that we have to cut out any food type. What the evidence does tell us is that, if we modify our diabetes eating habits we can control diabetes.

And it is usually small modifications that will cause the changes that are necessary. Diabetes eating is all about being sensible with food choices and how often the 'bad' choices are made. Food for diabetes sufferers is all about managing blood sugar levels.

And that, as far as I am concerned is the one abiding mantra that not only diabetes sufferers should follow but every being on the planet........................

Manage your blood-sugar level and diabetes will be under control.

What You Cannot Do :: Diabetes Eating :: Myths

So what do they say you cannot do in your diabetic eating regime?

These are some myths about diabetes eating habits:
You cannot eat desserts
You cannot lose weight slowly, it must be a crash diet.
You cannot eat certain food types.
You cannot lose weight unless you do heavy exercise.
You cannot lose weight unless you skip meals
You cannot eat starchy food.
You cannot eat fast food.

These are all diabetes eating myths.

What You Should Do :: Diabetes Eating :: Myths

These are the types of myth about what you should do if diabetic:
You should stop eating desserts.
You should lose a lot of weight, fast.
You should eat only healthy "diabetic" foods.
You should do strenuous work-outs.
You should skip meals to lose weight.
You should stop eating starchy foods.
You should not eat fast foods.

These are all diabetes eating myths.

What You Must Do :: Diabetes Eating :: Myths

These are the things you must do control diabetes eating:
You must stop eating desserts.
You must lose weight fast.
You must eat "diabetic" food.
You must do strenuous exercise.
You must cut out meals.
You must stop eating starchy foods.
You must stop eating fast food.

These are all diabetes eating myths.

And this is how diabetes eating myths come about. Each has an element of truth in it. But the message is only half true. You are given the "Chinese Whisper" when it has passed down through half of the whisperers.

You take in only part of what is the truth of the matter. Now I have told you all the mythical mantras about diabetes eating habits that you cannot, should or must do, we can look at the real truth about diabetes eating.

I have made these statements several times, changing the words slightly, in order to try to drum it in that these statements are just not the full truth. They are partial truths. They are statements without the conclusion at the end.

Let us look at each statement in turn

Diabetes Eating :: Myth 1 :: Desserts are forbidden

_____________________I love desserts!______________________

______If desserts are forbidden then I may as well not be here!______

The truth is, there's room in your diet for any kind of food, especially the ones you love most ..............

[Your body tells you what it wants and your brain interprets the need. Physical factors impact these positive feedback systems and the body craves for things when it does not need them. And that is what leads to the problems our bodies have. One thing leads to another.]

......................... as long as you control your total caloric intake.

Denying yourself your favourite foods can lead to binge eating and then discouragement.

Diabetes Eating :: Myth 2: You Need To Crash Diet

_________________________That is true._______________________

But small, sustained, weight-loss improvements at the beginning of a weight-loss programme have the biggest impact on diabetic health.

Studies have shown that losing between 2 kg (5 lb) and 5 kg (10 lb) can improve insulin resistance enough to allow some patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus to quit medication or insulin.

A very positive outcome.

Diabetes Eating :: Myth 3: The Quality Of The Food Diabetics Eat Is More Important Than The Quantity

_______________________Both matter_________________________
______but research shows that the number of calories in your food_____
___________is more important than where they come from.___________

Example:

a bagel might seem healthier than a doughnut (donut),

but dense bagels have the calorie content of six slices of bread.

As long as you are not eating too much fat in other foods,

the doughnut wins.

Diabetes Eating :: Myth 4: If You Exercise Hard You Will Be Able To Eat Whatever You Want

________________That's robbing Peter to Pay Paul.______________

You cannot lose weight
if you reduce calories
in one way
but increase them
in another.

To lose weight
you must burn
more calories
than you consume.

Diabetes Eating :: Myth 5 :: Skipping Meals Makes You Lose Weight Fast

__________Actual studies show people who skip breakfast__________
_____________tend to be heavier than people who don't.____________

And skipping meals tends
to make you overeat later.
If you have diabetes
it's important to keep up
a steady intake
of small portions of food
throughout the day to keep
your blood-sugar levels
stable and reduce
the risk of hypoglycemia.

Diabetes Eating :: Myth 6 :: Starches Are Fattening

____________________If you are insulin resistant__________________
______your body may find it easier to convert carbohydate calories______
___________________to fat than to burn it as energy.________________

The fact remains that starches
(and other carbohydrates)
are less dense in calories
gram for gram
than other types of food.

The main issue is calories.
So if you load starchy food
with fat or eat them in large
quantities, the caloric load
can add up.

Diabetes Eating :: Myth 7 :: You Should Never Eat Fast Food

______________________Never say never._____________________

Fast food can be worked into your
meal plan if you choose well.
Opt for grilled foods instead of fried.

Avoid. or scrape away. high-fat dressings
like mayonnaise, and share those french
fries around to keep portion size down..

Diabetes Eating :: What You Can Do

So, to make the points again but positively rather than negatively:
You can eat desserts, in moderation.
You can lose weight gradually for best effect.
You can eat most things if you eat small portions regularly throughout the day.
You can lose weight by burning more calories off than you take in.
You can lose weight without skipping meals
You can eat starchy foods as long as the overall calorie intake is controlled.
You can have fast food if you choose well.

If you have enjoyed reading this article, please take a moment to give some feedback. It does not have to be written down, although I have left some pencils for you to use. [Please do not remove them, the next person may need to use it]. It could be just a thumbs up (hopefully not down) and an indication as to the emotion it evoked. And if you have the time please consider returning to the top of this hub to post on Facebook and Twitter, thank you.
